Description
We are in the center of Athens, the capital of Greece, on February 23, 1969, a date that marks the end of the Carnival events of that year.
In front of the building of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, workers place seats for the officials who are going to attend the Carnival parade with the Mount Lycabettus in the background. Across the sidewalk, we see a little boy dressed as a traffic police officer. The city, the shops, the streets, the nightclubs are decorated with big masks, effigies, confetti. A man comes out of a tavern.
From a balcony on Stadiou Street, at the height of Kolokotroni Square, the filmmaker gives us shots of the decorated cars that take part in the parade, horse-drawn carriages, carnivalists in groups or alone as well as the Philharmonic orchestra.
Then, we see themed chariots with familiar to children figures, such as Mickey Mouse, the clowns, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, a huge female figure dressed as a bride and passers-by carnivalists. Cheerleaders, dancing couples, men and women in local costumes, an advertising float of the flour products company, "ALLATINI" follow and the parade continues in the illuminated city.
Citizens are partying, singing, blowing their whistles, the filmmaker is now among them, as they have arrived in Plaka, outside the nightclub "Old Athens" where the singers Marinella, Dimitris Mitropanos, Klio Denardou and Sophie Zanninou sang.
