Description
We are in the port of Piraeus, on the Miaouli coast, where the British aircraft carrier "Hermes" is moored and accepts visitors.
The ship, whose construction began in 1944, served in the Royal Navy of Great Britain from 1959 to 1984, carrying Sea King helicopters, Sea Harrier FRS.1 and Harrier GR.3 fighters. In 1986, it was sold to the Indian Navy for $465 million, renamed INS Viraat and remained active until 2017. Thenceforward, it was permanently withdrawn and in 2019 it was decided to be scrapped. The aircraft carrier, which weighed 23,000 tons, was estimated to have traveled a distance equivalent to 27 times the circumference of the Earth by 2017.
The film opens with a shot from the ship’s interior, specifically from the deck of the hangar, where residents of the wider area have arrived to take a tour of this historic aircraft carrier. Then, we are moved to the flight deck with the British flag waving while in the background we can see the port’s buildings.
The camera shows us the Royal Navy helicopter 710 and behind it we see the advertisement of the Greek paper company "Softex", on the roof of a building across the port and the shipping station "Seka". Two men of the crew walk on the deck among the guests and then we watch shots from three more Royal Navy helicopters.
Shots of the ship from the port pier follow, as the band prepares a parade for visitors. Lastly, we follow the course of the band, while the horizon is occupied by the volume of "Hermes”.
