Description
After the fall of the seven-year military dictatorship in Greece (1967-1974), elections were held on November 17, 1974, when Konstantinos Karamanlis was elected Prime Minister. While elections would normally take place again in four years, various national issues hastened the elections for November 20, 1977.
We are on Mitropoleos Street, in Syntagma, on the eve of the elections, a day on which the outgoing Prime Minister closes the series of the campaigning speeches of the leaders of the political parties. The filmmaker from Mitropoleos Street gives us a shot with a part of the crowded square, by the voters of New Democracy party who wait for the appearance and speech of Konstantinos Karamanlis. In the background the building of the Greek Parliament is visible.
We see a panoramic shot of the crowded square, people hold blue flags-representative color of the party-, banners with slogans, blue balloons in the sky, “rain” of flyers. We can see the King George and Grande Bretagne hotels as well as the beginning of Stadiou Street.
Konstantinos Karamanlis appears on the balcony and greets the gathered crowd. He begins his speech and the filmmaker, from a nearby balcony, gives us a close views of the politician.
The people have a pulse, wave flags and banners, shout slogans, the speech is over, a few more shots from the excited crowd, the Parliament and the neon sign of the home appliance company Pitsos.
